Republicans respond to Democrats on gas tax alternative
By Amy Cherry

The state House Minority Leader responds to a letter from Democrats regarding his proposal to transfer DelDOT's operating budget from the Transportation Trust Fund into the General Fund.

In a previous letter, Democrats asked Republicans to come up with General Funds cuts to make the fund transfer possible.

In response, State Rep. Dan Short says legislators are discouraged from interfering with the Joint Finance Committee's budget writing process.

Short says he welcomes the idea of working together on a bipartisan plan to begin the transfer, if Democrats believe the JFC can't be trusted to handle the challenge.

He also recommends eliminating seven-and-a-half million dollars in new initiatives in Governor Markell's proposed FY-2015 budget, citing a duty to pay current obligations before assuming new ones.
