Frederica Fatal Crash
By Walt Barcus

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit reports a fatal crash Friday night near Frederica. Police say 42 year old Tricia Martin was traveling westbound on Barratts Chapel Road just east of McGinnis Pond Road. For unknown reasons the car crossed over the eastbound lanes and off the south side of the roadway where it drove along a ditch line, colliding with a telephone box and fence. The vehicle then struck an embankment causing the it to overturn on its side and come to a stop back in the roadway.
While Tricia Martin was still inside the vehicle, her daughter, Taryn exited the vehicle and was attempting to ask for help from a passing vehicle that was stopped in the roadway. At the same time, an SUV driven by Richard Triola struck the first vehicle pushing into the ditch. Tricia Martin was ejected from her vehicle and thrown onto the roadway upon impact. Taryn, who was standing outside of the vehicle in the roadway, was struck by one of the vehicles and thrown onto the south side of the roadway and into the grass. Tricia Martin was flown to Christiana Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Taryn Martin was initially transported to Kent General Hospital before being transferred to A. I. DuPont Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Richard Triola, who was properly restrained, was taken to Kent General Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Barratts Chapel Road east of McGuiness Pond Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
