The Delaware State Police report:
The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a dirt bike that occurred last evening.
The incident occurred on September 17, 2019 just after 9:00 p.m., when a Trooper observed a green Kawasaki Dirt Bike, an off-highway vehicle, that is not street legal and not equipped with any lighting source, traveling on Wilkins Road near Sussex Bayhealth Hospital. The Trooper attempted to stop the dirt bike, when the operator preceded to flee at an extreme high rate of speed. The operator of the dirt bike eluded the Trooper and created a significant distance between himself and the Trooper.
The dirt bike proceed westbound on Johnson Road approaching Marshall Street in the limits Lincoln. A 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, was facing eastbound on Johnson Road preparing to make a left turn onto Marshall Street. The operator of the Traverse did not see the dirt bike due to its lack of a headlamp and proceeded to turn left onto Marshall Street. The front of the dirt bike collided with the left front fender of the Traverse, causing the operator of the dirt bike to be ejected.
The operator of the dirt bike, 38-year-old Adam J. Burton, of Lincoln, DE was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and does not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license. He was transported to the Sussex Bayhealth Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Traverse, a 49-year-old female of Milford, DE, was properly restrained and remained on scene. She was transported to the Sussex Bayhealth Hospital, where she was treated and released.
The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
