Sussex Tech's Matt Warrington throws a pitch in the 2019 Carpenter Cup

Delaware South's Trey Matthews, Dom Velazquez, and Matt Warrington combined for 16 strikeouts as Delaware South defeated Delaware North 7-3 in the opening round of the 2019 Carpenter Cup Baseball Tournament in Philadelphia.

Delaware North struck first, with Salesianum's Jake Dunion powering a drive out to left for the North's first home run in the event in 12 years, but then the pitching settled in for the South.

Newark Charter's Matthews gave up just 1 more hit while striking out 6 in his maximum-allowed 3 innings of work.

He'd get offensive support off the bat of CR's Brandon Hatch, who hit an RBI grounder after Nate McGray's double put two runners in scoring position.

Hatch then came up in the 4th inning, and singled to left for a second RBI, with McGray giving the South the lead for good when he scored on a wild pitched.

After the line-ups for both teams flipped to allow everyone to play in the showcase, another CR product, Ryan Rigby, picked up the school's third RBI of the game with a single to left that drove in Newark Charter's Brett Callahan.

Two batters later, Callahan's high school teammate Brett Lesher drove in two more runs with a single to right. Rigby would later add the 7th run as he scored as part of a double-steal attempt where an out was made at 2nd base.

While this was happening, Dover's Dom Velazquez was dominating during his 3 innings on the mound, as an infield single by Matt Sinko was all that prevented him from pitching perfect baseball with 5 more strikeouts.

Warrinigton, a First Team All-State pitcher, did give up a run when Conrad's Kyle Walker singled and eventually stole home on a double-steal, but it wasn't enough for the North.

Delaware South advances to face Pennsylvania's Inter-Ac/Independents Friday at 12:30pm at FDR Park in Philadelphia. The winner of that game will play in a semifinal on Monday at Citizens Bank Park.
